Character Modelling Process

 Over the last couple of days, I have began to model the rough shape of my character within Maya.

The entire process went quite smoothly up until reaching the head of the character. This is where I had the most difficulty, yet at the end, the most satisfaction. I was not too sure at first how to tackle the very beginning stages of the shaping of the characters head. I spent quite a while getting the general shape of the head and then beginning adding features such as the cheek bones, nose and general mouth shape.


 

The eyes posed a great challenge and required many different alterations until I came to a version I was happy with. Some made the character look more like a rat instead of a mouse, however, in the end, the overall shape of the head seems to resemble that of rat more than a mouse. After adding ears and more alterations to create a more realistic facial structure and nose shape, I concluded on the characters head.


 

I then extruded and began creating arms and hands. Seeing as the character is more in the style of a cartoon or pixar character, the hands did not require to be to high in detail in my opinion. I had the general arm shape and detail set out and modeled the hand. A decision on whether to add nails like the feet was made and concluded that it would be a little too much detail for this type of character and possibly too small to benefit from any more detail.



As I began to shape the legs, I also added the belt that would be worn my him, and found that it could instead be the waistband of pants. After editing the thighs slightly, I noticed slight creases in the model which seemed to give off a more clothed look and decided to instead model him with the suggestion of wearing pants. The modelling of the feet went relatively smooth and nails were added to complete their look.



 Lastly I went over the entire model and shaped finer details such as the shape of his shoulders and torso, his arms and neck. I still must complete his tail and try to attempt to add his sash and possibly a rough cloak if time permits.
